Subject: Re: crew 42 and other items From: "jmarino" Date: Wed, 31 Dec 2003 08:13:46 -0500 To: "Larry & Susan Westin" This list of names updated from the "names" image sent by Hthaiwon Layne, daughter of crew member Dave Layne. High resolution image, and image with names added 11/13/20. The names image provided more complete names (first name and middle initial). Cool! The following is taken directly from the notes I placed on the back of my copy of the Crew 42 photo when I received it. I wrote the info on the back of the picture because even at 21 I knew I might forget some of the "players" over time. I also have listed some of there nick names as we affectionately called them (usually at crew parties to their faces of course) and have also included the names of 4 members who for one reason or another were not present for the crew photo. Anyway...here it is: Standing Left to Right 1. Donald F. "Hitch" Hitchcock (R.O.) TSgt 2. Josep T. Marino (CIM) eventually (ACICO) (Jumpmaster) Sgt 3. Raymond C. Krezniack (CIM) Sgt 4. C.D. "Dave" Layne (ACICO) TSgt (A superior mentor and the epitomy of an NCO leader) 5. James L. "Smitty" Smith (EW) Capt 6. Charles R. Herring (CIM) Sgt 7. Robert O. "Grumpy" Beaulieu (FLt Eng) And a wonderful guy I might add. 8. James L. Humphrey (CIM) Sgt 9. "Jose" S. Chapa (RMT) (introduced me to jalepano peppers at midnight chow prior to some night missions.) 10. Bruce D. "Gundy" Gunderson (CIM) Sgt. Beat me unmercifully at tennis on a regular basis. Kneeling Left to Right 1. Frederick W. "Fate Freddie" Brown (CoPilot) Lt. 2. James V. "The Pope" Rampello (NAV) Capt. 3. Leo D. Prince (NAV) Maj. 4. Arden I. "Loverboy" Blaylock (Aircraft Commander) Capt. I should add that the nickname was given because of his good looks and fighter jock image rather than anything he did when we knew him. An outstanding aircraft commander who kept us all tuned in to the task at hand. 5. Gerald B. "Jerry" Maddox (Flt Eng) TSgt 6. Robert W. "Syco" Bradley "CICO" Capt. Nickname given due to his uncanny ability to come up some "off the wall" comment during times of stress which invariably broke the tension. Not Shown but still very imortant members of this eclectic , tight crew. 1. "Kal" Kalenberg (RMT) 2. "Jerrey" Turmelle (CIM/ACICO) 3. Kear (3rd pilot) 4. "George Baby" Gaines (R.O.) Let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Joe
